More about Doing Well

Doing Well does two
things. Firstly, for some people living in Renfrewshire, we are able
to provide one-to-one help for depression in local GP practices.

This website aims to
provide helpful
information about depression, wherever you might live. Depression is
a very common problem, yet it can often be difficult to know what
kind of help- if any- you might need to recover.
One problem is that the
word "depression" covers such a broad range of problems: from
feeling down for a day or two, to being so ill that you can't
function properly at all. We think that the first step in recovery
is to get a rough idea of how severe your depression might be.

about assessing your own level of depression.
Different kinds of
depression need different treatments, and Doing Well aims to help
you make sense of some of the choices you have.
For people with mild
depression (scoring less than 15 on the PHQ), antidepressant drugs
are not usually helpful. It would be better to try alternatives-
such as self help and practical lifestyle changes. It's worth
remembering that 4 out of 5 people with mild depression will recover
without any professional help within a month or two.
For people with more
severe "clinical" depression", self-help and lifestyle changes may
still be helpful. But many people need to take an antidepressant, or
talk to a therapist (or both) to really recover fully. This website
describes some of the choices you have.
Finally, the stigma
around depression means that people don't like to talk about it-
even though it's one of the commonest health problems in Scotland.
We've seen hundreds of people with depression over the last year or
so, and include some of their stories on this site, since their
experience might be helpful to you.
